Laundry Room Design Tips
Reimagine your laundry space with creative laundry room ideas. Explore exciting ways to create an efficient laundry space you’ll love spending time in.
Your washer and dryer are the heart of your laundry room, and one of the first decisions made during laundry room renovations is whether to use stackable or side-by-side units. Stackable units are preferred when space is limited. They offer a convenient height for loading and unloading clothes, making them a common choice for smaller laundry rooms. For those who prefer side-by-side placement, custom cabinets or a folding countertop above your laundry appliances will make the most of the space.
Counter space is crucial in any laundry room. It provides a surface for folding and sorting clothes, pre-treating stains, and organizing laundry supplies. In a side-by-side washer and dryer setup, the countertop is typically about 34 inches deep compared to a standard 24-inch kitchen counter. This extra depth accommodates the appliances while providing ample workspace and plenty of room to set your laundry baskets on!
Upper cabinets in laundry rooms are also typically deeper than kitchen cabinets. This design choice is intentional, as the depth of the washer and dryer pushes you further away from the wall. Deeper laundry room cabinets ensure that detergents and other laundry supplies always remain within easy reach.
If space and plumbing allow, a utility sink is a useful addition to the laundry room. It’s perfect for hand-washing, pre-treating tough stains, and quick clean-ups. If space allows, a large farmhouse sink can be an excellent choice. It provides ample room for soaking larger items and effectively contains splashes.
We’ve noticed an increasing trend in hanging clothes to dry. To accommodate this, we often install a rod either placed near a window to take advantage of natural sunlight or above the sink to allow water to drip directly into it.
Incorporate custom closets to maximize laundry room storage. These closets can accommodate seasonal storage and everyday household items of various sizes and shapes, from brooms to vacuums. Some clients even opt to include a craft area or a space for wrapping presents in their laundry room. Whether you have a small nook or a large area, we’ll design a space that reflects your needs and maximizes functionality.
Proper lighting can transform your laundry experience. We recommend a combination of recessed ceiling lights for overall illumination, task lighting for detailed work, and natural light when possible to create an airy feel.
Prioritizing durable cabinetry and moisture-resistant surfaces is essential for any laundry room makeover. It’s best to avoid painted MDF in high-humidity areas or where there’s a chance of water damage. Instead, we recommend materials like polyester, thermal materials, or melamine to ensure your laundry room stays beautiful and functional for years to come, even in high-humidity conditions. Leading with light shades such as white, light blue, or gray will make the space look airy and open, but we’ve also designed some amazing laundry rooms in fun, bright paint colours!
Where Should My Laundry Room Be Located?
Choosing the right location for your laundry room can greatly impact its functionality and your home’s overall flow.
A basement laundry room offers ample space for a complete setup, all your laundry essentials, and noise isolation from living areas. It’s also often pre-plumbed for laundry connections, making installation easier. However, it does require trips up and down stairs and may feel isolated from the main living areas.
An upstairs laundry room, possibly in a hallway closet, is convenient to bedrooms where most laundry originates. It eliminates the need to carry laundry up and down stairs and can utilize unused closet or small room space. However, it may require plumbing work and soundproofing.
Placing the laundry room near the kitchen offers a central location for easy access and allows for multitasking while doing laundry. Additionally, existing plumbing nearby can reduce installation costs. However, it may compete for space with kitchen storage, potentially creating noise disturbance in the main living area.
A mudroom and laundry room combo is convenient, especially for washing outdoor clothes and sports gear. It efficiently combines two functional spaces and is often located near an entrance for easy access. However, it may become crowded during busy times, so organization and storage systems are crucial to keeping both areas clutter-free.
A hybrid bathroom-laundry room offers a practical solution for homes where space is at a premium. The success of this combination hinges on intelligent layout and multi-functional features. For instance, consider installing a washer and dryer that can be concealed behind attractive cabinetry in your bathroom design, incorporating a pull-out drying rack that tucks away neatly.
