November 4th, 2023, was a very special night as 725 of Ottawa’s building and design experts gathered together for the Annual Housing Awards Gala. Laurysen Kitchens was nominated for an impressive 17 designs and, by the end of the night, had earned two of the highly sought-after awards.
This year, the evening was extra special because it marked the 40th anniversary of the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association (GOHBA) awards program. Indeed, it’s come a long way from its humble start in the basement of the old Talisman Hotel on Carling Avenue back in 1983. Forty years later, the stunning event was held at The Westin Ottawa and emceed by hilarious James Cunningham from TV’s Eat Street. The theme was “timeless,” a perfect choice to celebrate the association’s rich history and the long legacy of the awards program.
Corey Laurysen, the Vice President of Sales and Service, shared his sentiments about the gala, remarking, “It was truly a night to remember. Ottawa’s designers, builders, and renovators showcased unparalleled creativity and skill.” He also expressed his overwhelming pride, stating, “Our wins and nominations speak volumes about the depth of talent we have at Laurysen. Innovative designs and quality craftsmanship shine through in each and every project.”
First prize: Production Home, 2,001 sq. ft.+
Designed by Ola Elmaghraby in collaboration with Urbandale Construction, this award-winning contemporary kitchen is light and airy. The soothing colour palette blends crisp white with a cool, muted green, enhanced by strategically placed light wood accents and brushed brass hardware and fixtures. The long island, featuring a sink and a luxurious marble-inspired quartz countertop, is both elegant and functional.
First Place: Custom Kitchen (251 sq. ft.+) Traditional under $100,000
Designer Zeina Agha’s winning creation is a perfect blend of beauty and functionality. Flooded with natural light, the kitchen features cabinets in a soothing combination of white and navy blue. The large island, complete with inviting seating and clever storage solutions, serves as a focal point for meals and social gatherings. With gray and gold highlights, the white Silestone countertops add an elegant touch and perfectly placed oak shelving adds a warm, organic touch to the design.
